Permits
One doesn't need prior permission to make a boat trip through the sunderbans outside the sanctuary area.Permits are,however,necessary to visit the estuarine delta area.These permits allow you to visit the sajnekhali wildlife Sanctuary & the project tiger reserve areas within Sunderbans.Indians can obtain the permits from the office of the fiel director,sunderbans tiger Reserve,port canning,24 pargana or the forest office at sajnekhali.Your travel agent too can make these arrangements.

Nearest airport:Dum Dum (112km approx from the sunderbans).Take the bus from Esplanade or dharamtola for basanti/sonakhalli
Rail
Nearest Railhead:Port canning (44km/1.5hrs)on the malta river.Trains run from kolkata sealdah station to canning.To approach the sanctuary,head for basanti or sonakhali,an hr away and on to sajnekhali on the gombdi River.You will have to take a series of boat (most unpleasant at low tide as you wade knee deep through slush to catch the boat) & bus/auto connections.The rail options is best avoided-instead take a direct bus from kolkata to basanti/Sonakhali by motorboat.Yatri boats charge about rs.20 for the trip
Road
One can drive to sonakhali via the basanti main rd from kolkata;the road branches off from the EM bypass (2hrs).There are also daily bus services from the kolkata bus stand at dharamtolla & babughat to namkhana (105km),Raidighi (76km),sonakhali (100km) & Najatare (92km),from where private as well as WBTDC's motor launch services ara available for a tour of the sunderbans
